Syllabus, Schedule and Faculty
Welcome to a new concept of summer music fun. This year’s Parrsboro Upstream Sessions will take participants down roads less traveled by the jazz industry to tap well-springs of creativity. The New Jazz Orchestra, The Funk Ensemble and Silent Film Orchestra represent distinct points of departure where experienced musicians of all ages can discover new directions to take home with them for lifelong study. “Like Columbus discovering America…. well, it was already there” Al Neil – be-bop pianist, artist and author - from Changes © 1989. We invite you to join with this year’s faculty and go where no bands have been before……
Session 1
Upstream Jazz Orchestra (UJO)
10 am to 12 pm Tuesday to Friday.
Under the leadership of Artistic Director Paul Cram, UJO will start with basic listening and playing exercises, where players reveal their originality through rapid responses in the moment. From there strategies will be developed to organize sounds and effectively harness the forces at hand. The sessions will utilize “conduction”, an approach to conducting that channels the energies of the players into improvisations that can have us charging over grooves with shouting vamps to storms, waves, fire and brimstone. In contrast the sessions will delve into more abstract expressionist solo, duo, trio and free improvisations along with serial compositional methods: One page scores with graphic notation will be developed, played through and analyzed to show what works. Students are encouraged to contribute to a collective composition. We will play, organize and rehearse this work along with faculty compositions into a UJO Concert on Saturday night.
Session 2
Parrsboro Upstream Funk Ensemble
2 PM to 4 pm Tuesday to Friday.
This ensemble will be led by Rick Waychesko , who has extensive knowledge of the fusion jazz funk songbook. The Ensemble will learn the music of Mike Stern and other luminaries of the genre. In contrast to the more freewheeling UJO, the emphasis here will be on precision and getting the music tight. Everyone will be encouraged to participate, although the funk ensemble session could inevitably divide into groups according to experience and skills.
Session 3
Parrsboro Upstream Silent Film Orchestra
8 pm to 10 pm Tuesday to Friday.
There is a school of thought that says that jazz came out of silent movies. If you have never experienced the vertigo and panic of playing to a relentlessly changing medium, this is for you. Even if you have experienced the terror it’s a compelling challenge that never goes away. We will be working primarily with Buster Keaton’s classic 1928 film Steamboat Bill Jr. The score is a “short” written for the film by Upstream’s Paul Cram. The score has lots of thematic material to play but leaves room for improvisation and “Micky Mousing*” with the characters.
*Mickey Mousing: where music follows on-screen movement.
Saturday will be a day for dress rehearsals and sound-checks: Schedule TBA

Jazz Fest review: Love Upstream with Erin Costelo
Costelo's voice and compositional prowess received a fulsome workout.
POSTED BY GRAHAM PILSWORTH ON FRI, JUL 17, 2009 AT 1:19 PM
Who approached who really doesn't matter. The fact that it happened and a large crowd in the Jazz Tent yesterday afternoon got to listen to and thoroughly enjoy Erin Costelo with Love Upstream was, well, beautiful. This was a playback for me of a nervy idea: namely for a group of Costelo's finely wrought original songs to be rearranged by members of Love Upstream.
Gyrated into fresh shapes, textures and colours, Costelo, bravely would then perform these new settings. With the band. In concert. I luckily got to hear that. Bowled me over then. Bowled me over again hearing those numbers reprised. Costelo, unlike many of her contemporary young singer-songwriter peers, is no musical naif. Well-schooled in higher-learning music programs, she knows her stuff. And therefore is cognizant of the wide historical range of styles musical inspiration could be dressed in to show it off to its best advantage. Because of that and her sharp intelligence and stellar talent, her compositions, to me, evoke the cutting lyric smarts, memorable melody-making and stand-out musicianship of one of America's finest songwriters-- the brilliant ironist Randy Newman. With one exception. Vocalizing. Newman's croaky, strained-through-rusty-steel-wool vocals cannot ever compete with Costelo's rich, flexible, dynamic alto voicings.
Costelo's voice and compositional prowess received a fulsome workout. From "The Day Before War" which kicked out the tropes with a jaunty, ol'-timey show tune bounce --talk about irony, given the subject matter--to the achingly beautiful ballad "Go Home," to a rivet-popping, spine-shaking, foot-stomping song setting by arranger/bassist (and Costelo sidesman), Lukas Pearse. A blend of the twist, bossa and trance rock. "Stereolab meets Chubby Checker," he explained. A matchless program of whing, slang, song for a splendid afternoon. My sole complaint? That I couldn't hear it again. And again. And...

A Party Where Music Means Food!
Dear Friends of Upstream,
Upstream's 18th season is at an end and we are ready to unleash a new one. To delight you, we have chosen a meshing of improvised music and inspired food.
MUSIC: Daring musicians have agreed to mill about and await the call to improvise. As guests, you are the conductors of the night. At any time, you may turn to musicians and for a small donation request a solo, duo, trio etc. "Play for us the letter M, Play the colour orange…." prompting the spirit of improvisation.
FOOD: The Handicraft Hash House performs "Variations on a Theme." Local painter and epicure Ted White has designed canapés, soups and salads especially for the night. The Bayou, The Waldorf, and The Salt Peanut are his creations and are available for a small price. He may be enticed to improvise more on the spot.
SEASONING: A new season is beginning in July with A Love Upstream at the Atlantic Jazz Festival, and we want to tell you all about it. Paul Cram, our Artistic Director, has a special and fitting presentation prepared.
FUN RAISING: Like a true party, we are not charging at the door, but like a true fundraiser we are accepting donations. With solos etc. you can pledge an amount to be tallied at the end of the night. Remember, we are a charitable organization; we will issue a tax receipt for all donations $25 and over. See you there!

- Concerning music improvisation and other related matters
Collecting the thoughts and perceptions that have evolved from his past twenty-five years of music making and observation of the natural world, Malcolm Goldstein offers a very particular view of improvisation: "the musician as one centered in the process of discovery, unfolding moment to moment, that is realized in the gesture of enactment/sounding." Through articles, previously published in various periodicals, interspersed and embellished with excerpts from journals, interviews, letters, and music scores, the author touches on social, political, educational, aesthetic and economic considerations as he explores the "expression of the wholeness of our humanity."
